WiNet is a pan-African platform that today serves thirteen African countries. We are building it so that selling Internet access in a neighbourhood becomes a real trade: no money paid upfront, no lost scratch cards, no books kept in your head.
All over Africa, people already resell Internet. A call box sharing its connection, a shop putting a router out on the terrace, a cybercafé selling browsing by the hour, a hotel handing a code to its guests. The need is there, and so is the demand.
But the way it has to be done is punishing. You have to spend money before you earn any: buying scratch cards, printing vouchers, tying up credit. You have to handle a pile of small slips that get lost, get handed out twice, and can no longer be counted at the end of the day. You have to rely on memory: who paid, who did not, how much is left in the till. And when the router goes down, you have to find someone who knows how to bring it back up.
WiNet replaces all of that with a simple mechanism. The end customer buys their own access, on the zone's portal, with their Mobile Money. The money lands in the zone's balance. The manager has paid nothing upfront, printed nothing, written nothing down: they open their app, see what has been sold, and trigger a payout to their number whenever they want.
WiNet is not foreign software translated in a hurry. It is designed, from the very first line, for the real conditions of an African neighbourhood.
The portal the end customer sees exists in French, English and Swahili, and picks the right one on its own from the phone. The Manager app and the admin console are in French and English. Nothing that matters is left in a language the user does not speak.
We design for the device managers really hold: little memory, a modest screen, a tired battery. The screens stay plain and fast.
The captive portal is deliberately tiny: no external resources, everything inlined, so it opens even when the connection is struggling.
MTN, Orange, M-Pesa, Airtel, Wave, Telecel, Nigerian USSD: in each of the thirteen countries served, this is how people pay every day. It sits at the centre of the product, not as an option added afterwards.
WiNet is not one single app: it is a set of surfaces that answer to each other, from the access point installed at the crossroads to the payout on your phone.
